Sowing the Seeds

Rosemary seeds can sometimes be slow and uneven to germinate, but with proper preparation they can sprout successfully. Before planting, soak the seeds in warm water for about 12 to 16 hours to help soften the seed coating and encourage quicker germination. Sow the seeds lightly on the surface of moist soil, as they require light exposure to germinate properly. Once temperatures stay warm and all danger of frost has passed, seedlings can be transplanted outdoors or seeds may be directly sown into the garden.

Growing Conditions

Rosemary thrives best in a location that receives plenty of direct sunlight throughout the day. Ideal growing temperatures range from 65°F to 85°F. Plant in loose, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. If your soil is dense or clay-heavy, mix in compost or other organic material to improve drainage and airflow. Keep the soil lightly moist during germination by watering gently to avoid oversaturating the seeds.

Germination & Growth

Under suitable conditions, Rosemary seeds typically germinate within 14 to 28 days. Mature plants generally reach heights of 12 to 36 inches and can spread outward as they grow. Space plants approximately 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for healthy airflow and development. For the best flavor and fragrance, harvest the leaves and tender stems before flowering begins. Fresh sprigs can be clipped as needed for cooking or drying.
