Candystripe Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) produces eye-catching heirloom blooms in a wide range of colorful patterns. The 2 to 3 inch flowers display beautiful streaks and splashes of red, rose, or pink over creamy white or pale yellow petals, making every bloom uniquely patterned. These cheerful annual flowers are excellent for fresh-cut bouquets and are highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Blooming continuously from summer into fall, they bring long-lasting color to garden beds and borders while thriving in full sunlight.
Zinnias originate from warm regions of South America and perform especially well in hot, sunny conditions. Plant them where they have room to branch outward and develop fully. Gardeners often encourage fuller growth by “pinching back” young plants, which involves trimming the stem just above a lower leaf set before flower buds appear. This encourages additional side branching and results in a greater number of blooms throughout the season.
