Catnip Herb Seeds For Planting (Nepeta cataria)

Catnip seeds can be started indoors or sown directly outdoors once temperatures are suitable. For indoor planting, begin seeds in peat pots about 6 to 8 weeks before the final expected frost date. Sow 2 seeds per pot on the soil surface, as the seeds need light exposure for successful germination. Avoid burying them deeply; gently pressing them into the soil is usually enough. Once the weather has warmed and frost danger has passed, transplant the entire peat pot outdoors or sow seeds directly into the garden bed.

Growing Conditions

Catnip grows well in locations receiving full sun to partial shade. Germination is usually best when temperatures remain between 60°F and 70°F. These plants prefer loose, well-draining soil that does not stay overly wet. If working with dense or compacted soil, adding compost or organic matter can help improve drainage and root development. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination by watering gently with a mist sprayer or fine spray setting to avoid displacing the seeds.

Germination & Growth

Under proper conditions, Catnip seeds typically sprout within 7 to 14 days after planting. Mature plants usually reach about 18 to 24 inches in height and should be spaced roughly 12 to 18 inches apart for healthy airflow and growth. Known for their strong fragrance, Catnip plants are especially popular with cats and are also highly attractive to pollinators.
