[An old Italian heirloom reportedly cultivated by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello.] Light green fruits may grow as long as 36 inches, but they are most tender and flavorful when picked young at around 6–12 inches. The taste is more delicate and less strong than luffa gourds. Fast-growing vines are naturally resistant to many garden pests and serve as a productive zucchini alternative. Under normal warm conditions, plants are extremely vigorous, though cooler wet seasons may slow development. Vines can spread up to 20 feet or more, making them ideal for fences, trellises, or garden borders.
