Thyme Herb Seeds For Planting

Create a fragrant herb garden with Thyme grown from freshly harvested Thymus vulgaris seeds. This well-loved perennial herb produces compact plants reaching about 16 inches tall, topped with delicate pink blooms. The flavorful leaves are commonly used in cooking to season soups, sauces, fish, poultry, meats, chowders, and stuffing recipes. When in flower, Thyme also attracts helpful pollinators such as butterflies, hummingbirds, and bumblebees to the garden.

As a perennial, Thyme spends its first season developing a strong root system before returning year after year. Although winter frosts may cause the top growth to die back, the plants typically regrow once warmer weather arrives. Because Thyme readily self-seeds, tiny seeds may naturally fall to the soil below and produce new plants the following season.

Sowing the Seeds

Since Thyme seeds are extremely fine, they are best started indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the final expected frost. Lightly scatter the seeds across the soil surface without covering them, as exposure to light helps trigger germination. Peat pots or seed trays work especially well. Once outdoor temperatures have warmed and frost danger has passed, seedlings can be transplanted outside. Direct sowing outdoors is also possible during calm weather conditions.

Growing Conditions

Thyme thrives in full sun and prefers warm temperatures around 70°F or higher. Plant in loose, well-draining soil to prevent excess moisture around the roots. Heavy or compact ground can be improved by mixing in a small amount of compost or organic material. Keep the soil lightly moist during germination by watering gently with a mist spray to avoid washing away the tiny seeds. A layer of gravel or small stones around the plants can also help improve drainage and support healthy growth.

Germination & Plant Growth

Seeds typically sprout within 14 to 28 days after planting. Mature plants may spread outward as they grow, so allow approximately 8 to 12 inches of spacing between each plant. Harvest Thyme by trimming young stems as needed and using the aromatic leaves fresh or dried in a wide variety of culinary dishes.
